Deborah Davis and Hope Wood have been sisters for as long as they can remember. Hope definitely has, but Deborah was in this world for a couple of years as a non-sister but She can’t remember that much about it. So basically they’ve never known a world without each other.
If we could go back to 1963 and become that proverbial fly-on-the-wall, we would have to abandon the wall to fly far afield to catch up with the two girls. In the backyard we find them mixing the latest gooey concoction that they were hoping would magically become soap. In the vacant field we stay out of the reach of their swooping butterfly nets. Or we catch a ride on the stack of library books in the bicycle basket, follow them down to the riverbank, watch them pick strawberries in the garden. They do a couple of drawings of insects, examine the chickens in the chicken yard… let’s stay right here… rather a good place for a fly don’t you think. Hope’s theory is that all of us are trying to return to the person that we each were at eleven. You know that person… that uncomplicated and unapologetic pre-pubescent curious explorer of the world.
Deborah and Hope both pursued art in college and went on to explore wherever the insatiable spark of curiosity led . Deborah became a photographer, painter, naturalist, gardener, clinical herbalist, permaculture designer, and partner in Hillside Herbs. Hope became a sculptor, math tutor, super mom, gardener, keeper of chickens and peacocks, permaculture designer, and also partner in Hillside Herbs.
